You Gotta Believe

You Gotta Believe is a sports movie that’s as hokey as you could, well, believe.

Based around the true story of Little Leaguers who made an impression on sports fans when the team earned a ranking in 2002’s Little League Baseball World Series championship, You Gotta Believe pulls out all the stops to grab families by their heartstrings. However, the film doesn’t feel manipulative. As he exhibited in his heavier sports drama 12 Mighty Orphans, director Ty Roberts has a knack for finding chemistry amongst his cast and knowing how to gear and cater these dynamics towards the emotional beats in the script.

In the case of You Gotta Believe, considering how Roberts wants young viewers to be involved with the film’s material off of the baseball field, the emotions are much broader this time around. While this may feel as if the film doesn’t have much of a distinctive personality for parents, occasionally resembling a generic AI-generated sports flick, Roberts’ movie speaks well to kids without a note of condescension.

The film also parades solid performances by its young newcomers as well as from other experienced actors (including Greg Kinnear [of 2005’s Bad News Bears], Sarah Gadon [North of Normal], Molly Parker [Madeline’s Madeline] and 12 Mighty Orphans’ Luke WIlson [who sounds as if he’s doing an impression of his brother, Owen]). And as a bonus, the flashy pizzazz during some gameplay, quite frankly, rivals Challengers.
