I Don’t Understand You

Few movies can pull off comedy that’s been conceived from clumsy Americans on vacation. I Don’t Understand You is one of those anomalies.

Former Big Mouth co-stars Andrew Rannells and Nick Kroll star as Cole and Dom, a married couple who have been trying to adopt a child with no such luck. After several attempts, they’re matched with expectant mother Candice (Amanda Seyfried) just before a vacation to Italy to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Now with their getaway taking on a different celebratory meaning, Cole and Dom find themselves preoccupied with the thought of becoming parents while also trying to enjoy the Italian culture.

I Don’t Understand You, written and directed by Brian Crano (Permission) and David Joseph Craig, primarily takes place over the course of a chaotic evening. What begins with car troubles and authentic cuisine, ends with multiple murders. Craig and Crano’s dark comedy of errors finds its mileage in its earnesty. While Cole and Dom gradually become more hasty with their decisions, Rannells and Kroll consistently present them as exhausted tourists who want to relocate their sense of reality as much as they enjoy Italy’s welcoming atmosphere. Much of the comedy also relies on the language barrier between the leading couple and the people who are hosting them or lending their assistance. The setups offer the standard mixed signals between characters, but the jokes land because of the reactions that ensue. Rannells and Kroll are masters of finding comedy in awkward politeness, while the supporting cast maintain their own amusing confusion as they examine Cole and Dom or when they get lost in their own priorities.

I Don’t Understand You isn’t the blistering mean comedy that it could’ve been, but that’s perfectly fine. The movie functions at an ideal temperature that fits the film’s comedic personality.
