If you listen closely, you can hear the faint mouth-sounds of lightsaber beams. It’s the sound of a Disney fan pretending they’re Obi-Wan Kenobi as they circle September 8 on their calendar – Disney+ Day. Along with festivities taking place globally across Disney Parks, Disney+ subscribers will be given sneak peeks of upcoming projects as well as early perks. Ranging from early access to blockbusters and newly released Disney productions, to re-released exclusives, to early entry to Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.
New releases for Disney+ subscribers include the latest live-action remake Pinocchio (directed by The Polar Express’ Robert Zemeckis) and the opportunity to stream Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder (directed by returning Thor: Ragnarok visionary Taika Waititi) in IMAX Enhanced; meaning at-home movie goers can watch the latest Thor movie in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio at no additional cost. I trust Zemeckis and I can’t wait to see his rendition of Disney’s classic story, which also stars Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Cynthia Erivo. But as a fan of Waititi’s filmmaking and the accessible at-home IMAX format, I can’t wait to finally check out Thor: Love and Thunder.
Other exclusives include an addition to the Marvel Studios Assembled docuseries focusing on the making-of Thor: Love and Thunder and a documentary titled Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return, which will feature special insight and never-before-seen footage chronicling the making-of the latest Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. For lighter fare, families can enjoy new Sing-Along versions of Frozen and Frozen 2, a new Simpsons short titled Welcome to the Club, and an expansion on Pixar’s Cars universe in the new series Cars of the Road (reuniting the original talent of Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy).
Subscribers attending Disney theme parks at Dinseyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort can be admitted 30 minutes before general opening, and attendees can also enjoy Disney+-inspired meet-and-greets, photo ops (including complimentary Disney PhotoPass digital download(s) at select theme park rides), and a chance to take part in a fun selfie game using Disney PhotoPass Lenses specifically for Disney+ Day (at-home party goers in the U.S can take part in the game via Snapchat and the My Disney Experience app).
Disney+ Day will lead in other D23 Expo celebrations and exclusives from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11. However way you plan to celebrate, I hope you have a blast!
