Thank You Very Much is, most likely, the closest audiences will get to understanding comedian/performance artist Andy Kaufman.
With his first documentary since 2002’s Making Marines, and having a prominent background in directing for television since then (including Netflix’s children’s show Waffles + Mochi), Alex Braverman shows competence as a returning documentarian. He also exudes confidence when trying to unpack the uncomfortable genius of Kaufman’s routines and many personalities. Though the film itself occasionally takes on Kaufman’s essence, Thank You Very Much is much more concerned with comprehending what amused Kaufman, while also issuing reasons why the comic would want to push the boundaries of taste. The doc fulfils this mission by using tons of footage and interviews with Kaufman to build a case conveying his creative frequency, while also using fresh and delightful testimonials from Kaufman’s closest friends and former work colleagues.
Thank You Very Much is entertaining and insightful, and almost sticks its landing. Just like the women Andy Kaufman wrestled during his absurdly villainous chapter, the last stretch of Braverman’s film gets tangled in Kaufman’s deliberate repulsion before abruptly tapping out.
