The Miracle Club

Director Thaddeus O’Sullivan guides The Miracle Club efficiently, successfully telling a period story of four women who bond over the course of a pilgrimage to the French town of Lourdes in search of their own miracles to lend guidance for their medical conditions. Although the story’s devoutness is prominent, it’s mild compared to the focus on the film’s relationships.

Waking Nightmares: A Review of ‘The Sleep Experiment’

By: Liam Parker Scary movies are supposed to keep us up at night.  Things that go bump in the night and lurk beyond the shadows rob us of our ability for a good night’s sleep.  John Farrelly’s The Sleep Experiment, however, has the opposite effect: it leaves you begging to close your eyes.  But wait, the movie isn’t bad!  You’ll feel the need to escape to slumberland in order to feel safe again.

Rosie

Rosie is a realistic depiction of a family experiencing sudden homelessness.  After their rented house is sold by their landlord without much time to prepare for change, daily life becomes a struggle to find a place to sleep.  Parents Rosie and John Paul (Sarah Greene, Moe Dunford) scramble to find vacancies in local hotels, keeping the truth away from their four children.

Neasa Ní Chianáin and David Rane’s observational documentary, School Life, is an intimate look at the daily life at Headfort, a centuries old primary Irish boarding school.  The school is run by John and Amanda Leydon, who instruct their young students on a the usual range of disciplines – math, science, languages, sport, and music.

The Toronto International Spring of Horror and Fantasy Film Festival is a weekend dedicated to genre appreciation conceived by filmmakers Lari Teräs and Jon Lewis.  The festival returns to the city’s indie hot spot Carlton Cinema on Friday, April 7 and carries through to Sunday, April 9, promising movie goers an eclectic three-day event filled with music videos, short films, and unique movies that are out-of-this-world.
