Youth

By: Mark Barber Youth is Paolo Sorrentino’s follow-up to his Academy Award-winning film The Great Beauty, and his first English feature.  I have not seen The Great Beauty, but the constant praise for its Felliniesque style makes sense, given that Youth is just as self-reflexive and oneiric as famed Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini’s films.

Don Verdean

Director Jared Hess and his co-writer wife Jerusha Hess debuted in the spotlight with Napoleon Dynamite, and made audiences chuckle with their lower rung follow-up Nacho Libre.  I speak as someone who missed their critically maimed third endeavour Gentlemen Broncos, but I really enjoy watching whatever these two make.

Carol

By: Mark Barber Carol is a difficult film to describe without context.  I have occasionally found myself at odds with contemporary representations of queer identity, as it refuses to abandon elements of tragedy that have dominated for so long.  As Vito Russo points out in his celebrated The Celluloid Closet, queer characters rarely receive a happy ending.  Same-sex relationships were taboo for much of the 20th century, which was then reflected in their filmic representation….

Blood in the Snow 2016: ‘The Sublet’

Update (11/27/16): Addison Wylie’s original review of The Sublet was posted on 12/09/15 for the film’s SuperChannel premiere. However, due to the film’s Toronto premiere at this year’s Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival, the screening information located at the bottom of this article has been updated. John Ainslie’s The Sublet is pretty creepy, but it’s also a testament to how gifted of an actress Tianna Nori really is.

A Very Murray Christmas

Bill Murray’s idolatry exists because – for the most part – he’s unaware of it.  His humbleness threads through his film roles and who he is outside of the cinema.  It’s why we don’t roll our eyes when he’s crooning up a storm or when we see a viral video of Bill crashing someone’s wedding.  He knows of his popularity, but he doesn’t bother to dissect it.
