I wish I had a movie like Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls as a kid in elementary school. Aside from its terrific LGBTQ-friendly presence, it sports such self-confidence and reassurance in its characters; all wholesomely written and directed by Julianna Notten making her feature-length debut as a filmmaker. With a cast that boasts the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Candice Bergen, and Simon Helberg, As They Made Us is a surprisingly lacklustre start to Mayim Bialik’s directorial career.
Actor-turned-filmmaker Pat Mills has made some great comedies (Guidance, Don’t Talk to Irene), and he’s currently challenging himself by branching out to different genres (CBC Gem’s short-form series Queens dabbles with mystery, for instance). The Retreat is Mills’ shot at making a straightforward horror-thriller, and it doesn’t go as straightforward as his previous endeavours.
I can’t endorse Paradise Cove, but I also wouldn’t stop you from watching this trashy thriller about a homeless former model terrorizing a couple of homeowners who are new to the neighbourhood. Before the film becomes unforgivably dumb, it’s a shameless guilty pleasure.
I’ll be frank: Chick Fight is a disappointment. With a cast that boasts big names like Alec Baldwin, Fortune Feimster, and Bella Thorne, I expected more from this female-lead action-comedy.
