Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls

I wish I had a movie like Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls as a kid in elementary school.  Aside from its terrific LGBTQ-friendly presence, it sports such self-confidence and reassurance in its characters;  all wholesomely written and directed by Julianna Notten making her feature-length debut as a filmmaker.  Making as big of a splash is Elliot Stocking, who plays the titular Erin.  Stocking, in a breakout acting debut, hits a sweet spot with their co-stars…

Bandit

Brief stylistic choices in the comical caper Bandit reminded me of 2013’s Pain & Gain. And while I shuddered remembering how nasty Michael Bay’s true-crime comedy was, those feelings were soon followed by a sigh of relief as Bandit’s charm washed over me.

The Retreat

Actor-turned-filmmaker Pat Mills has made some great comedies (Guidance, Don’t Talk to Irene), and he’s currently challenging himself by branching out to different genres (CBC Gem’s short-form series Queens dabbles with mystery, for instance).  The Retreat is Mills’ shot at making a straightforward horror-thriller, and it doesn’t go as straightforward as his previous endeavours.

Paradise Cove

I can’t endorse Paradise Cove, but I also wouldn’t stop you from watching this trashy thriller about a homeless former model terrorizing a couple of homeowners who are new to the neighbourhood.  Before the film becomes unforgivably dumb, it’s a shameless guilty pleasure.
