Morbius

The output of movies based on comic book properties isn’t slowing down any time soon, which is why I appreciate filmmakers who take a different crack at the genre. While some of these anomalies are laughed off or forgotten by their demographics, I tend to stick up for these weird flicks (I got a kick out of the buddy comedy dynamic in Venom) . What I’m trying to say is that I wanted to be on…

Primal Rage

Primal Rage is a creature feature, but it’s light on what the film is selling.  For a special effects artist making his directorial debut, writer/director Patrick Magee often forgets about his film’s central beast.

Blood Hunters

The horror independent film scene may be the most supportive community of movie goers and filmmakers.  Take Blood Hunters, for instance.  Despite the movie’s routine qualities, I can imagine horror fanatics who scroll through weekly VOD titles every Tuesday will appreciate it for what it is – an honest effort with some admirably gruesome moments.  Blood Hunters isn’t just for this niche audience though.  It’s a harmless escape for those with a strong enough stomach…

Godzilla

By: Addison Wylie The only thing that could be more amazing than Godzilla’s timeless legacy is that Gareth Edwards was given the opportunity to direct a multi-million dollar modernized take on the creature.  Seriously, let’s all take a moment and realize how crazy and ambitious the producers had to be to invest so much trust into a filmmaker who doesn’t have a whole lot of feature film experience.  Those chancy attitudes have paid off big…

The pre-screening audience award ended up going to Matt Johnson’s innovative indie The Dirties, but hanging in as a close runner up was Bad Milo.  It proved…

Europa Report

By: Addison Wylie Europa Report made my head throb from boredom and ache from excessive visual irritations.  But before all that negativity, Sebastián Cordero’s found footage sci-fi opened my mind with its art direction and effects. Europa Report’s most impressive strength is its ability to make the audience feel as if we’re in that same spaceship as the featured crew members heading to Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.  Cordero has used subtleties to blend numerous…

Bad Milo

By: Addison Wylie Here’s a fun social experiment: try describing the premise of Jacob Vaughan’s Bad Milo to movie goers and see how long it takes for each of those people to give you a skeptical glance or laugh out of nervousness. It’s because Bad Milo is an odd movie with an odd set-up.  On the surface, it’s Office Space with a dash of Gremlins mixed in with a rough night after some bad Taco…
