Good Burger 2

I liked Good Burger 2, but it also feels like it was made for me and, maybe like, ten other people.  Good Burger 2 is the sequel to its 1997 predecessor, which began as a recurring sketch on Nickelodeon’s variety show All That.  Milking nostalgia is a current trend, but when does it become too much of an inside joke?

Trolls Band Together

While Trolls Band Together works as an innocuous piece of children’s entertainment, it’s official that the popular animated series may be finally spinning its wheels and overreaching for ideas.  Resident franchise directors Walt Dohrn (Trolls World Tour) and Tim Heitz (Trolls Holiday in Harmony) return to helm this sequel that does something the other feature-length movies haven’t done: call attention to itself.

The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story

I’m laying my cards out on the table: I have an unconditional love for Nickelodeon.  The network defined my childhood, helped diversify my media and sense of humour, and it was an outlet for truly unique entertainment.  As much as I tried to enter Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney’s documentary The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story without an enamouring bias, it was impossible.

Playmobil: The Movie

Part way through Playmobil: The Movie, I was settling into a marginal recommendation.  As a colourful distraction for young kids who are starting to show interest in action flicks, it’s generic yet harmless entertainment.  But as the story dragged on through shameless attempts to emulate The Lego Movie franchise, Playmobil: The Movie began to pick at my patience.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch

I’ve been hard on Illumination in the past, but for a good reason.  Universal’s animation company always seemed to be borrowing from other brands, from copycat plots to specific character designs.  This makes the studio’s version of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch a bit of an anomaly.  It’s an existing, well known property that could’ve been another clone but, instead, Illumination has provided a new take on the popular Dr. Seuss curmudgeon, which also includes luscious animation…
